Indah Water, a Cleaner or a Polluter?

From The Star (Nation)

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid:
Indah Water Konsortium (IWK) the biggest polluter

Sewage management company Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) is the main polluter of rivers in Peninsular Malaysia...Describing the situation as “very bad,” Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid said that IWK had not done its job anywhere it operated...“Ninety one percent of pollution of rivers in the country is from inadequately-treated sewage,” he said...There are some 17 rivers in the country that have been classified as critically polluted, of which three are in Johor – the Sungai Seget, Sungai Skudai and Sungai Tebrau......“To be very blunt, IWK has failed to do complete treatment of the sewage and they are the main culprits,” Abdul Ghani added...When reached, an IWK spokesman declined to comment.

[Full article]

Erm, I am puzzled, we pay IWK to pollute our rivers? Who is actually IWK? So I check their official web

Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd, a national sewerage company, wholly-owned by the Minister of Finance Incorporated, is responsible for providing sewerage services, operating and maintaining over 9,100 public sewage treatment plants, 16,000km networks of sewerage pipelines and providing scheduled desludging services to over 350,000 individual septic tanks in Malaysia since April 1994.

There are mainly two types of sewerage systems/services in Malaysia. The premises' sewerage systems are either connected to a public sewage treatment plant or have an individual septic tank.
IWK is mainly responsible for operating and maintaining the public sewage treatment plants and network of underground sewerage pipelines as well as providing desludging services to individual septic tanks.
The services are rendered through the company's 17 Unit Offices/Customer Service Centres located throughout the country, except Johor Bahru, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak.

OK, IWK is a gov related body responsible to clean our waste water, but they fail to do so.
As a Malaysian citizen, I wonder what is happening, something fishy perhaps.

what is this? IWK spokesman declined to comment? conspiracy? some politic games maybe? money corruption? aiyoo, so pathetic la nowadays people. even money is more important than human's life. it's so saddening.

As usual, I guess its corruption
It is sad, esp when ths happen among our Muslim bros

I just realized that only The Star reported this as IWK fault.

Utusan didnt mentioned anything bout IWK, instead they reported it as 'kegagalan kempen mencintai sungai"
Utusan frontpage: Kempen gagal -- Apa yang dicintai hanya indahkan tebing, bukan kebersihan sungai – Azmi

This bcomg more fishy

91% river pollution comes from inadequately-treated sewage? (As if sewage treatment plants are ones who produce the pollution.

Hello!!!

If there's no sewage treatment, all rivers will be polluted anyway!

They are not the culprits, the biggest are those who released the pollutants in the first place.

Come on, don't blame it on those who run STPs. Have not they read all the IWK adverts? on how hard they have to work, with the communities mostly not on their side?

(Emotional mode, currently doing a coursework on sewage treatment, and one of the addressed issues is the 'Not in My Backyard Syndrome (NIMBY) )

wondering what Azmi Khalid is doing in his office other than finding someone to blame.

H said...

Take it easy, Nasyrah :D

Yea, your argument make sense. Cant deny its a NIMBY syndromes, and its not totally IWK faults either (true, without IWK, all rivers will be polluted anyway). But the Q is, is IWK treatment efficient?, and why they deny to comment?

But taking into account the state of corruption nowadays, im not sure who's to blame, especially when two media reported Azmi's point significantly different. Utusan focus on 'love our river' campaign failure and the need to improve the campaign. While the Star point fingers at IWK.

might be just another political game...Election is comin soon.

But I have something to blame on myself. Inefficient water usage, will try to change.
Thx for the post :D

well
its all about awareness
people aware or not
people concern or not
people think or not
its REALLY difficult to educate people pertaining this matter...
even the "awareness" thingy is very broad issues
and become world's issue now..

H said...

Dear Zarul,
Awareness of? I guess u are talking bout environmental awareness
We cant go beyond that for now ;P

zafi said...

you should know what im trying to say bro....
"you said we cant go beyond that for now???"
im totally disagree!
i think this is one of a major problem...
Our people and ourselves...
we dont even realise sometimes about what happen
about everything under any circumstances...
until someone raise the issues...
until the issues become serious...
until the serinousness become disaster...

until...
you write something in your blogs...
this is a platform to create an awareness thingy to ensure people to react +vely...
to educate them the imporatant on doing this and that...
to get their attention....
Do u think its easy to educate people out there on impotance of "e.g buang sampah dlm tong sampah...sounds simple kan BUT ????"(:P)
how frequent you see the sampah all along the way to ur faculty and you'll directly pick it up?
how frequent do u think our people realised about all of the issues? until a disaster occured baru nak sedar.... kan?
Im not blaming anyone or u bro...
i just want to express the real situation...
im doin the security research on awareness now..
ive started to realise something yg tak kene...
the cause sama...
adehhh.... headache!
hmmm
Gosh...
we have only one earth
ask ur yourself what is/are you contribution(s) towards your enviroment?

Figure it out now!

* i missed my debate time in univ!LOL.... :D

H said...

Ouch,
I guess u misinterpreted my point.

Yes every single thing u mentioned is right, its all under environmental awareness, the superficial problem.

What I said was we cant touch the underlying problems, Social, Economy and at the end is a direct consequence of Politic. Remember we are Malaysian students? and students cannot say a thing in this matter.

zafi said...

who said we cant touch the economic and social problem...
bro all of it are totally diffirent entities...
you can say so in a correct manner...
you now as a student dont u?
Just perfect channel to raise the issues! come on... let Think!!!! :P
Dont think about the "kolot" stuff that ure not allowed to speak to give ideas...
pilih saluran yg betul.... :)
best of luck...

H said...

OK enlighten me Zarul
What is the correct manner?
What is the correct channel?
Thank you

p.s. I dont think we are not only not allowed to think about the 'kolot' stuff. (what is actually the 'kolot' stuff btw)
Bluntly, I can say, we here actually cant think at all.
Ud experienced being a college student here and there. I bet u know the differences. Pls let me know if im wrong. Thx again.

bro,
try and seek by yourself
instead of thinking that
(we're here cant think at all)---> what is this???
it does not mean that i dont want to share anything but i just wanted u to think...
instead of becoming people who only can write something here, sharing something here, let us think....!
yes i did had experience become a student here and THERE...i admit it..
alhamdulillah i did chosen the best path to make sure every singlE issues in my univ can be solved...
Speak up, get contact to people, raise the issues properly. (Think about how some of the students nowadays?they way how they speak? they way how they think?) Youre absolutely not one of these as ure really concerned about everything.. :)
Seriously i glad to know you... even most of my colleague also didnt even think or care about this...
Well...
there are right wrong about this issue... but plz dont say that u dont have right to speak, u CANT think about it...

sorry if im being too hard.what ever it is, you may proceed what you believe the best for you.. i talked based on my involvement in my career, politics etc.
i rest my case for a while..(psstt... nak sambung study)

again, Gomen ne. :)
gOOD LuCK!

from the article i read that Hafiz has posted it up here, i see:

1st issue: the problem is yes about people awareness according to this issue. as Zafi has said, it's not as easy as it says. awareness is sumthing that built and gained from oneself. so, it's rather a thing you can't force.

2nd issue: about the underlying issues. we never know what's the real thing happened in there until one day the newspaper came up with this issue and it surprised us alot. i bet it's like what Hafiz said, it's sounds fishy to most people like 'what happen?' bcos we dun get the 'real' problem there.

well, the things that you guys being 'talked' about i think (i think okeh!) is 2 different things. Zafi, yes at here we can think, we can speak, but it's all limited to what have been stated in the univ act. for that matters we can't touch any sensitive issues being raised related to politics or else i bet you also know how it will end. As this is what the 2nd issue i figured out from the article, we as student can't take this issue as our thing. I think (i think okeh) this is what Hafiz tryin to say; we can't go beyond that for now.

And, about the first issue; the awareness thing, i also agree with Zafi where it's one of the students' responsibilities to speak it up (in terms of the environment's problems). so that other people will get to see the real pic of the problems and we get the problems solved together. Tho it might only involved some social issues like health, economics and so on but still it'll go indirectly affect the politics' matters.

well the two different things i mean above is; Zafi talk about indirect solutions while Hafiz talk about direct solutions. well, both solutions may work well as long as Malaysians know what's best for them.

Correct me if I got it wrong anywhere. Thank you.

bravo la nana...
my provocation method towards my bro menjadi juga akhirnya..
actually tak ade yg menang kalah.. both correct...
ya i wont deny our voice limited in sense of nak benda kene berlapik...
actually problem occurs bcoz of the people itself... tak pilih cara yg betul nak salurkan....
i believe that every problem ade answersnyer but to find it jadi satu isu...
our people pulak always something directly but tak fikir disebaliknya...
and bila dah ade jalan, tak gune cara yang betul...
ya dlm kes ni jelas nampak ade berbau politics... so as org yg berilmu kita pon kene tahu la buat timbang tara untuk nilai isu ni..
its not the time for us to blame people but to gather and solve the problem...
our responsibilities....
dlm hal ni i should be proud to both of u sebab tahu menilai dan tahu menggali apa yg perlu dan tidak...

ask ur self berapa ramai kawan2 kita yg tahu dan ambil tahu tentang benda nih? satu dua? segelintir?

bro, sorry for provoking u... (Diam -diam ubi berisi nih...)

nana, the UN la yek?

ok... great to have a platform to debate and discuss mcm2 isu sini... sambil menggilap skil menaip kat pc nih... padahal exam lagi 2 minggu...
ok bro n sis take care
